{"id":1692,"date":"2019-07-26T15:42:10","date_gmt":"2019-07-26T19:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.floridacitrus.ca\/oj\/?post_type=fdoc-nutrition-page&#038;p=1692"},"modified":"2024-05-17T09:49:15","modified_gmt":"2024-05-17T13:49:15","slug":"thiamin","status":"publish","type":"fdoc-nutrition-page","link":"https:\/\/www.floridacitrus.ca\/oj\/health-nutrition\/thiamin\/","title":{"rendered":"Thiamin and Florida Orange Juice"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Thiamin?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Thiamin, also called vitamin B1, is an essential nutrient that the body needs to turn food into energy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits of Thiamin<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Thiamin is a vital player in energy metabolism, which means it releases energy from carbohydrates and also helps normal growth.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Foods High in Thiamin<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Vitamin B1 is naturally found in many foods including beans, meat, nuts, and Florida Orange Juice.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>One 8-ounce (1 cup) glass of 100% orange juice contains approximately 10% of the recommended Daily Value of thiamin.*<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thiamin Requirements<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Very little thiamin is stored in the body, and because it is used up quickly by the body, frequent consumption of thiamin from the diet is necessary.<sup>1,2<\/sup>\u00a0Thiamin needs increase during pregnancy and breastfeeding,<sup>1-3<\/sup> and intake strongly affects the amount of this vitamin in breast milk.<sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0Requirements for thiamin also increase during:<sup>1-4<\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Strenuous activity<\/li>\r\n<li>Acute illness or fever<\/li>\r\n<li>Recovery after surgery<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thiamin Deficiency<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Thiamin deficiency is rare. It is more common in people with specific medical conditions including alcoholism, Crohn\u2019s and other digestive diseases, and anorexia.<sup>1-3<\/sup>\u00a0Deficiency in thiamin can affect the cardiovascular, muscular, digestive, and nervous systems.<sup>1-3<\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<h2>DID YOU KNOW?<\/h2>\r\n<p>Thiamin was the first B vitamin scientists discovered, hence the name B1.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>*Values based on a 2,000 calorie diet.
